Coaching for Therapists
A Safe, Confidential Space to Strengthen Emotional Boundaries & Develop Sustainable Self-Care
From my experience, I find that self-care and emotional boundaries are tied together. When someone is practicing self-care consistently, there’s a higher likelihood that they’ll be able to set clear emotional boundaries so they’re not constantly taking on their clients’ issues. It’s when self-care falls to the wayside that boundaries — as well as everything else — can become more challenging..
What’s interesting is that, when practicing self-care and clear boundaries, our emotional energy gets refueled and burnout lessens. Emotional energy — the fuel we need to cope with life — is a term I first learned about from a colleague who is a former physician turned therapist.
The term resonated with me because as the caregiver for my wife, I experienced depletion of emotional energy — as well as overwhelm and boundary issues (emotionally and regarding my time) — losing sight of my self-care habits along the way. These factors that left me completely burnt out and on the cusp of addiction before I realized that I needed to start taking better care of myself immediately — otherwise, I would be no good to anybody.
